Course Description:

Marxist and Postcolonial Shakespeare looks at contemporary political theories about social and economic capital and about differences — class structures, gender/sexualities, race/ethnicity, religion and national origins — in selected dramas by William Shakespeare. Some of the theorists we will read are Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, Louis Althusser, Edward Said, Aime Cesaire, Franz Fanon, Homi Bhabha, Léopold Sédar Senghor and Ania Loomba. Some of the dramas we will read are Merchant of Venice, Othello, The Tempest, and Henry V.
