Personalize your Master of Arts in English to focus on contemporary literary and theoretical trends in literary studies. You can study abroad, conduct an independent study, write a master’s thesis, and/or earn a certificate in gender studies. A teaching practicum at a local community college also offers invaluable hands-on experience.

Who Should Pursue This Program?

If you’ve already earned your bachelor’s degree and are a working professional, this program offers the flexibility you need. While many students are part-time, full-time students can complete the degree in less than two years. You can also earn credit for an independent study, research conducted with a faculty member, and independent research culminating in a master’s thesis.

Engaged Faculty

In addition to literary scholars and critics, our faculty include poets, novelists, biographers, linguists, and English education specialists. Recent honors range from multiple CASE New Jersey Professor of the Year awards, the Rona Jaffe Foundation award, and a Guggenheim award to fellowships from the Bush Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

  • National Standardized Admission Test Requirement: Applicants to the MA in English are required to take the GRE unless they meet the criteria of the waiver policy. The applicant should request that a score report be sent to The College of New Jersey (Code #R2519). The general test information of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) may be obtained from ETS at 800/GRE-CALL. Test scores may not be more than five years old.
