Study Abroad Options

study abroadWe encourage all our students to consider studying abroad. Many go during the second half of the sophomore year or during the junior year.  You can experience global study for various lengths of time and on most budgets:

  1. If you are able to spend only a few weeks abroad, consider a faculty-led trip during a winter or summer session, such as LIT 367 British Theatre (in London and Stratford-upon-Avon) or LIT 338 African Literature (in South Africa).  See “Courses” for current study-abroad options in English, or the Arlotto Family Center for Global Engagement for other current study-abroad options.
  2. For a semester-length or year-length experience while paying TCNJ tuition, consider participating in a TCNJ Exchange Program. English liberal arts majors and English secondary majors could consider Northumbria University or Nottingham University (England).
  3. Other semester- or year-length options are nearly endless.  For instance, a course in Italian literature in Italy may be counted as an elective in English (see below).

Here are some tips on choosing courses abroad:

  1. Plan a mix of courses for your major(s), minor(s), and Liberal Learning.
  2. Take advantage of the school’s and region’s specializations.  No matter where you study, you should be able to find courses in the history of the region.
  3.  All courses must be pre-approved by the appropriate department (Liberal Learning courses by the assistant dean of Humanities and Social Sciences). Useful information may be found in the undergraduate bulletin, the list of courses approved for Liberal Learning, and the general guidelines for transferring courses into the English Department. Don’t rule out English courses for which TCNJ has no equivalent–the chair or associate chair may approve these as topics courses (270 or 370).

Students with primary majors in the School of Education should consult the School of Education.  English secondary education majors who wish to student-teach abroad should consult their advisors and the Arlotto Family Center for Global Engagement

Consider applying for the Mary Roebling International Travel Award to support research, internships, or service abroad (including but not limited to research done for a course). The award is restricted to undergraduates in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the deadlines are November 1 and April 1, and more information may be found here: http://hss.tcnj.edu/roebling/

Academic Affairs is offering “Access to Education Abroad” scholarships for Spring 2021, Summer 2021, Fall 2021, and Winter 2022. These scholarships are for TCNJ students who are participating in an education abroad experience and who exhibit significant financial need. Awards range from $1,000 to $4,000 depending upon the level of unmet need and the number of eligible applicants for a given award cycle.
