Topics in Literature: Gender and the Short Story
Professor Laura Neuman
Monday/Thursday 3:30-4:50pm
How is gender created as well as represented, within the short story? In this 200-level course fulfilling the liberal learning requirement, we’ll read short stories written by authors from around the globe. Together, we will examine the way these authors construct, fulfill, and challenge gender constructs in their stories. Why does gender matter in fiction, and how? This class will introduce students to the short story and to concepts from gender studies scholarship. Classes will be largely discussion based. Students will write short response papers and essays throughout the semester. Come prepared to read short works of fiction, to work collaboratively with your peers, and to examine and discuss different assumptions we have about gender.
