Ira Halpern’s research and teaching focus on US literature and the medical humanities. His current research traces literary investigations of medical care and social protest over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, investigating how fiction writers sought to reform, reshape, and reimagine the political possibilities of the health care system at an early moment in the professionalization of medicine. Halpern has work published in American Literature and forthcoming in Literature and Medicine. A dedicated teacher, he enjoys working with students from a range of academic disciplines, including the humanities, the social sciences, and STEM fields.
