LIT 170-02 Topics in English: Two First Novels
Professor: Diane Steinberg
Meetings: Tuesday 3:30-4:50pm (Please note this course only meets the second half of the semester)

*This is a partial unit course

Students will read, discuss, and analyze two very different first novels. We will begin with the 1970 novel by Toni Morrison, The Bluest Eye, which is her first published novel and which she set in her hometown of Lorain, OH, on the south shore of Lake Erie. We will also read, discuss, and analyze Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, which was her first full length novel, even though it was not the first novel she had accepted for publication. Austen began drafting Pride and Prejudice in the 1790’s, as a teen, and it was accepted for publication in 1813. Both novels have been challenged or banned books, so the class will also touch on why these novels should remain on library shelves. Student grades will be based on possible reading quizzes, class participation, and a single academic essay on either novel.
