Topic: Ecocriticism
Professor: Larry McCauley
Meetings: Monday Thursday 9:30am-10:50am
Course Description:
The term “ecocriticism,” describes some of what we will read in the course as well as the primary activity students will learn to engage in during the semester. That is, we will read seminal works of ecocritical theory while applying that theory to contemporary literary representations of the natural world and other cultural constructions of the relationship between humans and that thing/stuff/place we tend to refer to as “nature.” Subtopics will include environmental justice,
ecofeminism, toxic discourse, and activism. Authors include Barbara Kingsolver, Edward Abbey, Witi Ihimaera, and Ruth Ozeki.
